  • BOND ON CINEMA

“This film and the storyline are very emotional. The cinematography is beautiful, the flashbacks properly placed giving us the backstory. If you are a lover of film, you will want to replay the ending a few times, because it is not only something to see, it is an experience to feel. And you can feel the incredible power of a mother’s love in that scene. And you can feel the unconditional love and acceptance that Cristina receives from her mother.”

  • FILM THREAT

“Melissa Fisher’s short drama Buscando Alma seems deceptively straightforward. It takes skill to say a lot while barely parting lips, but that’s exactly what the director and co-writer achieves here. The 15-minute snapshot of a young person reconnecting with their mother touches upon the immigrant experience, the shame that comes with being transgender, generational differences, and the unbreakable parent-child bond.”

  • THE CONTENDING

    THE CONTENDING

“A winner at Atlanta’s Out On Film festival earlier this year, Melissa Fisher’s Buscando Alma is a film that charts acceptance and the power of love in an entirely new way. If you are close to your mother or any parental figure, how much of a void would you physically feel if you didn’t know when you would see them again? Fisher has created a queer film of specific loss and longing, but its huge heart makes this a universal story.”

  • CLOSE-UP CULTURE

    CLOSE-UP CULTURE

“My intention was to tell a story of compassion, healing, and acceptance for the LGBTQIA+ and Latinx communities. Hollywood often shows trans lives through a lens of trauma and discrimination, and while those struggles are real, we wanted to focus on a trans woman thriving in her life and relationships. It’s time we normalize these experiences and focus on their humanity. Similarly, the story highlights the sacrifices immigrant parents make for their children — people seeking safety, dignity, and belonging.”

  • OVERLY HONEST REVIEWS

“BUSCANDO ALMA stands as an achievement in film, redefining the boundaries of LGBTQIA2S+ storytelling with its heartfelt narrative, stunning visuals, and compelling performances. It’s an essential viewing experience that challenges viewers and invites them into a deep, reflective conversation about identity, heritage, and the bonds that define us. Melissa Fisher has not just made a film; she has sparked a crucial dialogue that resonates profoundly with a soulful call for acceptance and love, ensuring that the echoes of this story linger well beyond the initial viewing.”

  • ONE FILM FAN

“So, in total, Buscando Alma stands as both a distinctly haunting but above all uplifting tale of the trials of immigration, maintaining faith, overcoming the past, embracing the present, recalling what we long for, and then returning to what we truly need, with all of it ultimately centered on what is most needed now and forever–all-encompassing love for those we cherish and, by extension, the greater humanity around us. May we take a lesson from this and APPLY IT to see a better world to call home.”

  • NERDGEIST

“Melissa Fisher has given us this beautiful yet isolating tale that hit me right in the feels. Buscando Alma translates to searching for the soul, and I think that this simple phrase perfectly encapsulates the powerful imagery of this piece of art. A truly emotional story, with gorgeous cinematography and strong performances, it’s no wonder this film qualified for the 2025 OSCARS.”

  • UK FILM REVIEW

“This is definitely one of the better short films I’ve had the pleasure of watching this year, and it exemplifies a kind of socially conscious – yet cinematically inventive – mode of movie making which we clearly need more of, and should also be seen by many (in a perfect world). It’s a story filled with hope, filmed and constructed with great skill. So, let’s dive deeper into why it works as well as it does.”
